It was last winter, at my cousin’s birthday party in a very elegant restaurant. Most of the guests were adults who knew each other well and talked about art, politics and travel. I felt uncomfortable because I was much younger than they were and I could not join their conversation. I was afraid of saying something silly, so I mostly kept silent and smiled politely.

At first I tried to listen carefully and find a topic I could understand, but then I decided to stay quiet and not attract attention. In the end, this was not the best choice, because I should have been more confident and tried to ask simple questions or talk about something neutral. Next time I will behave more naturally and not be afraid to take part in the conversation.
