The Selfish Giant
Part I (after Oscar Wilde)
Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden. It was a large lovely garden, with wonderful fruit trees and beautiful flowers that gave 1. ______ perfumes. The birds 2. ______ on the branches of the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. In 3. ______ of these visits they felt absolutely happy.

He became angry. “How did you get access to my garden?” he cried. The children felt scared and miserable and ran away. “My own garden is my own garden,” muttered the Giant. And then, he roared, “I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” Saying this he didn’t feel any pang of conscience. He was a very selfish Giant, though he would never admit the fact.
