Focus on Syntax REPORTED CLAUSES that-clauses versus what-clauses a) No one knows that he has arrived. b) No one knows what caused the accident. Both clauses (a, b) are noun clauses but they are different. In (a) «that» can be omitted: No one knows he has arrived.
