B. In pairs make up a conversation between a parent and a child in which the child asks for something and the parent is rather doubtful that it should be bought. Use the subjunctive. Act the dialogue out.

A. If I were an animal, I’d be a cat because they are independent and graceful. If I were a plant, I’d be a rose because it is beautiful and elegant. If I were a colour, I’d be blue because it is calm and peaceful. If I were a food, I’d be pizza because it is tasty and popular. If I were a drink, I’d be tea because it is warm and comforting. If I were music, I’d be classical music because it is harmonious and inspiring. If I were a country, I’d be Italy because it is sunny and full of art.

B.

— Mum, please! Will you buy me a new phone?

— I’m not sure you really need it. If I bought you a new phone, you would spend too much time on it and would forget about your studies.

— But I would use it for schoolwork too! It would help me find information and stay in touch with my classmates.

— Perhaps, but if you had a new phone, you would be on social media all the time.

— I promise I wouldn’t. I would only use it when I needed it.

— Well, if you really needed it for school, I might think about it.
