There is a widely held belief that change in a language is always for the worse. Older people hear the casual speech of the young, and conclude that standards have fallen markedly. They blame most often schools, public broadcasting institutions, etc. Any change from traditional norms often provokes severe criticism. Languages also tend to be simplified, because it is easier and quicker to communicate this way. For example, in everyday speech people often say gonna instead of going to, or use short forms like don’t, can’t, I’m.

Modern writers often choose simple sentence structures and informal words to make their texts more natural and closer to real speech. Another important reason for language change is borrowing. For example, many European languages have taken words from American English, such as computer, internet, marketing, and weekend.

So, language change is not a sign of decline. It shows that language is alive and develops together with society.
