Sample dialogue:
A: I think you are making a mistake. Life in the country is much healthier and quieter. There is no noise, no traffic jams and no air pollution.
B: But in the city there are more opportunities for work, study and entertainment.
A: That is true, but in the country you can enjoy fresh air, beautiful nature and a slower pace of life. It is a better place for your health and peace of mind.
B: Still, I would miss cinemas, shops and public transport.
A: You can visit the city when you need it, but living in the country will give you more comfort and less stress.
B: Maybe you are right. I should think about it again.
Writing to give arguments
When people write argumentative essays, they usually consider a problem from different points of view and give arguments for and against it. In the final paragraph they write their conclusion and express their own opinion.
The body of an argumentative essay usually has four parts:
- Introduction
- Arguments for the point under discussion
- Arguments against it
- Conclusion
For example, if you write about computers, you can say that they give people easy access to information, help them work and study, and make life more convenient. On the other hand, computers may reduce face-to-face communication and cause health problems such as eye strain, headaches and insomnia. In the conclusion, you should sum up your ideas and state your opinion.
