Mother Teresa’s activity in Calcutta was particularly difficult because she worked in very poor conditions, among sick and dying people, with little money, little comfort and almost no support. She had to show great patience, courage and compassion every day.

Other quiet everyday activities can also be heroic: caring for a sick relative, raising children alone, helping elderly neighbours, working as a nurse, teacher or doctor, or simply supporting people in need without expecting praise.

“Unheroic” heroism is the kind of courage that is not always noticed. It is ordinary, modest and silent, but it is very important because it helps other people and makes life better.
