Текст аудирования:
Story A
At first he didn’t answer. I waited — my heart beating very fast. I was afraid he was going to say: ‘I’m sorry, but something terrible has happened.’ Then he smiled and said gently: ‘We are going to live by the sea. You’ll have a new mother, and a brother the same age as you to play with. We’ll have a wonderful new life.’ I was so stunned I couldn’t respond. But he was looking at me anxiously, waiting for my answer. Finally I managed to say, ‘That’s great, Dad. When are we moving?’
Story B
‘No, I’m not, Dad. It’s the truth. I didn’t see anything!’ I answered bravely. But he was right. The night before I’d heard a noise in the garden and got up to look out of my bedroom window. Dad was digging a hole under a tree — and I saw him bury a bag. Now I knew what it was — and I was scared to death. Dad was a hard man and I was terrified of what he might do. He looked at me suspiciously for a moment. Then he said, ‘I hope you’re telling the truth or you’ll be in deep trouble.’
Story C
He laughed and said, ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about. How can you possibly have a boyfriend at your age?’ I was furious. Of course I had a boyfriend! He sat next to me at school and was my best friend. I stood in front of my father with my hands on my hips and said confidently, ‘His name’s Michael and I’m going to marry him when I grow up.’ His face went dark. ‘You’ll never marry a man called Michael while I’m alive,’ he threatened. That was when I started planning what I would do …

Подробный ответ

1. Louise Doughty is a writer and journalist.

She invited people to send in their own stories and responses to the website.

I would be interested in a course like this because it sounds creative and thought-provoking.

2. The most engaging and intriguing responses make me want to read on, because they promise an interesting story and make me curious about what happens next. The scary, disturbing and upsetting ones also attract attention, but in a more emotional way.

3. The responses report:

  • an affirmative sentence — say, tell
  • a wh- question — ask, want to know
  • a yes/no question — ask
  • an imperative sentence — tell, order, ask
  • a request — ask, request

Other verbs can be used: explain, promise, warn, advise, suggest, admit, complain, reply.

4. In direct speech:

  • a) “I’m going to the cinema.”
  • b) “Where do you live?”
  • c) “Are you coming with us?”
  • d) “Open the window.”
  • e) “Please help me.”

In reported speech, tenses usually move back one step, and pronouns change according to the speaker and the listener. The Future-in-the-Past is used when the reporting verb is in the past and the action is still in the future from that past point.

5.

  • b — said; the statement is a universal truth, so it does not change.
  • c — says; the reporting verb is in the present, so the future form does not change.

7.

  1. Experts have said that sea levels will rise in the next fifty years.

My dad said that I also had plenty of home assignments to do. I replied to him that I had done them and had finished them all the day before. I said to my parents that I would not be out for long and that I would be back by 11 p.m. My mom told me to give her a call on my way back.

“We’ll have a wonderful new life.”

“That’s great, Dad. When are we moving?”

Reported speech:

He said that they were going to live by the sea. He said that I would have a new mother and a brother the same age as me to play with. He said that they would have a wonderful new life. I said that it was great and asked when they were moving.

12. I like the quote about secrets because it is true in real life: sooner or later, the truth usually becomes known. It reminds us that honesty is important and that lies are difficult to hide forever.

Writing

I think the quote “Secrets always come out in the end” is very true. In my opinion, the author wants to show that people cannot hide the truth forever, because sooner or later it appears. This idea is easy to understand and it sounds realistic.

I agree with this point of view. First, lies usually create more problems than they solve. Second, when people keep secrets, they often feel stressed and guilty. Third, truth helps people build trust in relationships.

For example, in many books and films, a hidden secret causes conflict, but in the end the truth is revealed and everything becomes clearer. In real life, I have also seen that when someone tells the truth early, the situation is usually easier to solve.

To conclude, I believe this quote is wise and important. It reminds us to be honest, because the truth is always stronger than a secret.
