Ally and her friend Ed bought three tickets in a raffle for a Caribbean holiday. A few days later the winning number was announced in the paper, and Ally was sure that she had it — except she couldn’t find the tickets. She looked in all the sensible places, like her purse, and the drawer of her desk, then she remembered that they were in the pocket of her jeans … but her jeans were in the washing machine! She rushed to get them out, but it was too late — the tickets were there, but they had almost disintegrated and the numbers were impossible to read. She tried talking to the competition organisers, but they said that since she’d forgotten to write her name and phone number on the receipt for the ticket, there was no proof that she’d won. She hasn’t told Ed about what happened yet.

Rob: Hi Ally, it’s Rob … Just wondered if you want to go and see a film or something tonight.
Ally: Oh Rob, hi … Thanks, but I don’t really feel like going out tonight …
Rob: Why, what’s up?
Ally: Oh, it’s just so, well, you won’t believe it, but I could’ve won a holiday …
Rob: But that’s amazing! Why do you sound so miserable? What do you mean ‘could’ve’?
Ally: That’s just it — I didn’t win, but I had three raffle tickets and I’m absolutely sure one of them was the winning number.
Rob: What do you mean? That doesn’t make sense.
Ally: I washed the tickets.
Rob: Oh no! Why on earth …
Ally: I know, I know, I should’ve put them somewhere sensible, but they were in the pocket of my jeans, and they basically fell apart in the hot water and you can’t really see the numbers at all — if only I’d checked the pockets before I put the jeans in the machine!
Rob: But won’t the people who organised the competition accept the ticket anyway?
Ally: Huh! I wish they would, but I’ve already spoken to them, and apparently I should’ve written my name and address on the receipt — you know, in the book of tickets — so that I had proof if something like this happened …
Rob: Oh dear, that is a bit of a problem!
Ally: Yes, well, they gave our prize to the person who came second … It’s just not fair … I mean, I should be sitting on a beach in the Caribbean, not in a cold flat in London … I wish I’d given Ed the tickets to look after.
Rob: Oh, you bought them together, did you?
Ally: Uhuh.
Rob: What did he say about his nice clean ticket?
Ally: Come on Rob, this is serious!
Rob: Sorry … well?
Ally: Umm …
Rob: You haven’t told him, have you?
Ally: I feel so stupid but I suppose I’d better ring him …
