John said that he was leaving on Monday. In reported statements we change the verb tenses, pronouns and time expressions that were used in the direct speech. • «I play tennis every Sunday», Ann said. In reported speech we change the verb tense, pronouns and time expressions.
- Present Simple → Past Simple: “I play tennis every Sunday,” Ann said. → Ann said she played tennis every Sunday.
- Present Continuous → Past Continuous: “I’m feeling ill,” Pat said. → Pat said that she was feeling ill.
- Present Perfect → Past Perfect: “She has moved house,” Tony said. → Tony said that she had moved house.
- Past Simple → Past Perfect: “He left last week,” Sally said. → Sally said that he had left the week before.
