1. Shanty towns were started when large numbers of people moved from the countryside to cities, but governments failed to provide enough decent and affordable housing.

2. People living in shanty towns face unemployment, poverty, malnutrition, child labour, overcrowding, lack of clean water and sanitation, disease, crime and violence.

3. The situation can be improved by giving residents loans to start businesses, providing basic services such as electricity and water, and helping slum communities gain legal ownership of the land.
