Задача

3a. Diane Fossey loved animals and worked as an occupational therapist. She worked miracles with disabled children. However, she had always wanted to see more of the world. After reading several books by George Schaller, she decided to save up and go to Africa for six weeks to see wildlife. When she first saw the mountain gorillas, she was fascinated by them and began observing and recording their behaviour.

She returned home, trained as a zoologist and then went back to Africa to spend the rest of her life studying mountain gorillas. In time, Diane got to know the gorillas as individuals and gave each one a name. One day, a young male gorilla called Peanuts came up to her and touched her hand. After some time, Diane earned their trust and was able to sit with the gorillas and play with them and their babies.

Diane’s favourite gorilla was a young male called Digit. Tragically, on New Year’s Day in 1978, Diane discovered that he had been killed by poachers. Poachers were local people who made money by selling the gorillas’ hands, heads and feet. Their heads were sold as wall decorations, while their hands and feet were sold as ashtrays. Several other gorillas met the same fate. Diane declared war on the poachers.

Unfortunately, she was so outspoken that she became a target for violence. On 26 December 1985, she was found murdered in her cabin. She was buried in a cemetery next to her beloved gorillas. She was 53 years old. Her killer, probably a poacher, was never found.

What happened to Diane’s beloved gorillas can happen to any animals whose body parts are used to make souvenirs. So be careful and never bring exotic gifts home along with your beautiful memories. Buying souvenirs made from ivory, animal skins, teeth, bones, coral or turtle shells endangers animals and supports poachers. Do not contribute to the destruction of innocent animals.
