Paul Cézanne: colour, shapes and perspective

Paul Cézanne was one of the most important Post-Impressionist painters. Two of his well-known paintings are The Card Players and Mont Sainte-Victoire.

Cézanne used colour in a very careful way. He did not try to copy reality exactly. Instead, he used strong, balanced colours to create harmony in his paintings. His colours often help to show light, depth and mood.

He also simplified shapes. Objects in his paintings often look like basic geometric forms such as cylinders, cones and spheres. This made his work look more structured and solid.

Cézanne’s use of perspective was unusual. He did not always follow traditional rules of perspective. As a result, his paintings can look slightly distorted, but this gives them a special sense of space and movement. His style influenced many later artists and helped develop modern art.
