The convict’s way of speaking is very different from Pip’s. His speech is rough, uneducated and full of mistakes, while Pip speaks more correctly and politely.
The parts that show this are:
- “wittles” — means victuals / food;
- “a boy” instead of a more polite form of address;
- “I’m a man” — simple, direct speech;
- short, broken sentences and unusual grammar.
Dickens did this to make the convict sound real and to show the difference between social classes and education. It also helps the reader understand the character’s background and personality.
