A STRANGE BURGLAR’ IN BIG MOUNTAINS
Part II
Then Father said, “It’s such a lovely day. Would you like to go for a walk into the forest?” Everybody agreed.
When the family came back, they saw that the front door was open.
They came in and went into the kitchen. “The fridge is open,” shouted George.
“Oh, yes,” Mother said. “And look, there is no fish or fruit in the fridge and there are some eggs on the floor.”
“I know what happened. While we were out, we had a burglar in the house,” said Mr Jackson. “I’m going to call the police.”
Soon the police officer came. He looked everywhere in the house and in the garden and saw some footprints. Then he looked up at the chimney.
“Start a fire in your fireplace,” said the policeman. “Then come out into the garden and watch your chimney.”
Mr Jackson did it.
9 What do you think the end of the story is? Tell it to your classmates.
10 Now read the real end of the story. Is it different from yours?
Suddenly out jumped a little racoon.2 He jumped from the chimney to a tree and was gone.
“I can’t believe my eyes,” said Mr Jackson.
“Now you know who your burglar was,” said the policeman.

11 Imagine you’ve got a new flat (a house). Describe it in written form. Don’t forget about the furniture.

Work in groups. Make Chapter 2 of your own book called “See What We Can Do in English”.
Chapter 2 may include:
— the title of the chapter (connected with the topic “The Place We Live In”);
— stories, poems and songs about houses and homes;
— colour pictures and photos of buildings and rooms;
— descriptions of ideal or unusual homes, your favourite objects in the house;
— your own word games.

1. Look at the pictures and “furnish” the rooms of the flat.

2. Describe any room of your flat.

This is my room. There is a bed in the corner. The desk is near the window. The chair is in front of the desk. The bookcase is on the left of the door. The lamp is on the right of the bed. The carpet is in the middle of the room.

3. This is Smiths’ house. Say what they usually do in each room, what furniture is there.

In the bedroom they sleep. There is a bed, a wardrobe and a bedside table.

In the bathroom they wash and take a shower. There is a bath, a sink and a mirror.

In the study they read and work. There is a desk, a chair and a bookcase.

In the kitchen they cook and have breakfast. There is a table, chairs, a fridge and a cooker.

In the dining room they have meals. There is a dining table and chairs.

In the living room they watch TV and relax. There is a sofa, armchairs, a table and a TV set.

4. Make up your own sentences using these words.

• This book is easy.
• London is a famous city.
• It is important to help your parents.
• This task is difficult.
• My room is very quiet.
• It is a wonderful day.
• She has a lovely doll.
• This house is very expensive.

5. Describe the house or the flat you would like to live in.

I would like to live in a big and comfortable house. It would have three bedrooms, a large living room, a bright kitchen and a study. There would be a garden near the house. I would like my room to be quiet and cosy, with a desk, a bed and a bookcase.

6a. Ask Pete questions for more information.

• Where did you see the burglar?
• What did he look like?
• What did he do?
• Did you call the police?
• Was anybody with you?

6b. Tell the class your story.

And suddenly I saw a burglar. He was in the house. I was very frightened and called for help. Then the police came and looked everywhere. In the end we found out that it was not a real burglar.

I think the burglar is an animal. It came into the house through the chimney and took the food from the fridge.

10. Read the real end of the story.

Suddenly out jumped a little racoon. He jumped from the chimney to a tree and was gone.

11. Describe your new flat (house).

I’ve got a new flat. It is not very big, but it is comfortable and bright. There is a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. My room is cosy. There is a bed, a desk, a chair and a bookcase there. I like my new flat very much.
