Russian and British Writers of Science Fiction
Alexander Belyaev (1884–1942) is a famous Russian writer who wrote science fiction. One of his most famous books is The Shipwreck Island. When the writer lived in Leningrad (St Petersburg), he met British science fiction writer, H. G. Wells, who was his friend and visited Russia in 1934.
Herbert Wells (1866–1946) lived in England and was a writer of science fiction novels too. People called him the “father of science fiction”. One of his most popular novels was and still is The Invisible Man.

Read an episode adapted from The Shipwreck Island by Alexander Belyaev and continue the following sentences. Write 1–3 words.
The shark that was lying on deck suddenly moved its strong body and knocked Simpkins with such force that he fell off the ship into the water. Professor Thompson cried to the sailors, “Throw him the rope!” Simpkins was a good swimmer, but the professor knew that sharks never swam alone. Soon, other sharks appeared and were swimming nearer to Simpkins, but he did not notice them. The sailors jumped into the boat and soon they were near their friend. At that moment, the sharks began to knock on the boat. One shark swam up to Simpkins and opened its mouth, but a sailor in the boat threw a piece of wood into it. Soon all the sailors were on the ship. They saved the life of their friend.

Close Encounters
By Boris AdropovLast summer my dad and I decided to go camping. The mountain trail was not easy. An hour later we found the perfect spot and put up our tent. Then we both looked for firewood. Suddenly we heard a strange noise. It was a low moaning sound, as if a creature was in pain. We froze. The noise became louder so we dropped the wood and ran as fast as we could back to our tent. Unfortunately, I tripped on a rock and twisted my leg. My dad dragged me back into the tent and then he called for help. Thirty minutes later a ranger came to pick us up. We felt relieved. I ended up with a sore ankle. We never found out what that noise was.

When I looked out of the window the weather was dark and stormy. Then the engines started and everyone fastened their seatbelts. The next thing I knew, we were up in the sky. At first, everything went smoothly. Then, suddenly, there was a flash of lightning and the plane started jumping around. The stewardess told us not to worry and to keep our seatbelts fastened. After that, it just got worse and worse. The plane tipped over from side to side and I began to feel really scared. Fifteen minutes later, it dived down towards the ground at a huge speed. “We’re going to crash!” I screamed as I closed my eyes in terror. I couldn’t believe it when we landed safely at the airport. As soon as my cousins heard about it, they laughed. Apparently, pilots often dive suddenly to avoid air pockets. All the same, I was very relieved to be down on the ground again!
