Read the sentences and find the key words. While listening, try to listen for words/phrases related to the keywords.
2 a) You are going to listen to six people talking about their flats. Read the sentences (A-G) in Ex. 2b and find the key words. In pairs think of words related to them.
Don’t like: hate, can’t stand, etc

Speaker 1
I live on the top floor of a block of flats. I can see a beautiful park from my bedroom window, and a famous building from my living room window. People on the floors under me can’t see what I see. I am very lucky.
Speaker 2
I don’t like catching buses or trains so it’s important for me to live very close to a supermarket, a chemist’s and a post office. I want to walk out my door and have all the shops I need. Luckily, my flat is in an excellent location. It’s great. I can buy anything I want quickly.
Speaker 3
I live in the city centre in a lovely flat. There are huge glass windows in every room so my flat is very bright. I always have the windows open — in the winter and in the summer. Luckily, I live on a top floor of a block of flats so there isn’t any noise from the street. I don’t like noise.
Speaker 4
I live in a brand new flat. I love it. But I haven’t got lots of brand new things in it. I’ve got lots of old things because I think old tables, sofas and desks are so nice. I have got a bookcase that is 100 years old. It’s beautiful. Everyone notices it. Things that are only a few years old are not very interesting.

There isn’t much space inside my flat, but that’s ok because I live alone and I haven’t got a lot of furniture. Also, I am always out with my friends. I don’t like to stay at home. It’s much more fun to be out doing things! So it doesn’t matter that the rooms in my flat aren’t big.

I live in the city, but I am lucky because there is a big outdoor space with flowers and trees beside my block of flats. In the summer, I sit under the trees and read. It is always very quiet. I only hear birds. It is very relaxing.
c) Listen again with pauses. Which words helped you decide on each choice?

Fit for a President
What is the most famous building in your country?
Is it a symbol that everyone can ecognize? 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a very famous address in Washington, USA.
1 The White House is one of the most famous symbols of America. It is the home of the President and hie family. It has got a long history stretching back over two centuries to the year 1800. It is like a museum with beautiful furniture and expensive artwork and it is open to the public.
2 This impressive building is very large. It has got six floors. 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 3 lifts and 8 staircases. A number of the rooms are offices including the world famous Oval Office. There is also a huge kitchen and 5 chefs there can make dinner for up to 140 people at a time.
3 The White House has got some very beautiful gardens. They are over 18 acres of gardens and they have got a number of different species of plants and trees. There is even an organic garden for the First Family to use. There are also 2 fountains. One in front of the building in the North Lawn and one in the private South Lawn at the back of the White House.
4 There are a variety of facilities for residents and guests to use. There is a cinema and a bowling alley to relax and have fun. There is also a gym, a tennis court and a swimming pool to stay lit. And the White House is also green. It has got solar panels for its heated swimming pool.

We use short clear sentences and avoid being chatty.

Your elder sister wants to study English at York university. She wants to rent a flat nearby. Help her to write a short notice to put on the student noticeboard. Include:

Flat to rent near York University

I am looking for a flat to rent near York University. It should be small or medium-sized and have at least one bedroom, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The flat can be in a quiet area, but it should be close to the university. I can afford up to £500 a month.
