Jay Douglas was buying a teddy bear for his sister in a famous toy shop.

Jay’s friend asks: “I saw you in Hamleys at about 11 o’clock yesterday. Were you only looking at toys?” He uses the Past Continuous tense: were you looking, was choosing.

The rule: we use the Past Continuous to say that an action was in progress at a certain moment in the past.
