Portfolio: Look at the map. Act out dialogues asking for/giving directions from:
- the bakery to the newsagent’s;
- the bookshop to the café;
- the music shop to the chemist’s;
- the toy shop to the square;
- the chemist’s to the supermarket.
Use the phrases in the box and the sentences in Ex. 1. Record yourselves.
Asking for directions
- Where’s the…?
- How do I get to…?
- Could you tell me how to get to …?
Giving directions
- Go up/down…
- It’s on your right/left.
- Turn left/right…
- It’s on the corner of…
- It’s next to/near/opposite/between…
Sample dialogues:
1. From the bakery to the newsagent’s
A: Where’s the newsagent’s?
B: Go down the street and turn right. It’s on your left, next to the bank.
2. From the bookshop to the café
A: How do I get to the café?
B: Go straight on and turn left. It’s on the corner of Green Street and Park Road.
3. From the music shop to the chemist’s
A: Could you tell me how to get to the chemist’s?
B: Go up the street and turn right. It’s opposite the supermarket.
4. From the toy shop to the square
A: Where’s the square?
B: Go down the street and turn left. It’s near the post office.
5. From the chemist’s to the supermarket
A: How do I get to the supermarket?
B: Go straight on. It’s on your right, opposite the chemist’s.
