Текст аудирования:
From the History of New York
Four hundred years ago Manhattan Island was the home of Native Americans. American Indians lived there. In 1609 a ship “The Half Moon” from Europe came up the river to Manhattan. There were some Europeans on the ship. One of them was Henry Hudson. Today the name of the river to the west of Manhattan is the Hudson River.
Seven years later, in 1626 another man came from Europe to Manhattan and he bought the island from the Indians. He gave about twenty-four dollars for Manhattan. Soon some wooden houses appeared there and people gave the little town the name of New Amsterdam. In 1647 about five hundred people lived in New Amsterdam. It was a fairly large city. In 1664 the British took the city and gave it a different name. It became New York.
At the end of the 18th century about 33 thousand people lived in New York, but then millions more men and women began to come to America from all over the world.
These new Americans often lived in the same streets with other people from their country — Italians with Italians, people from China with other people from China. Today New York has parts that everybody knows as Chinatown and Little Italy.
Nowadays about 8 million people live in New York.
