Before Europeans arrived, Native Americans lived in tribes. They grew plants, hunted animals and fished in their waters. They lived in wooden houses or wigwams. They thought that different spirits could help them. They kept their traditions and culture, made songs and poems, and were mostly peaceful people.

After Europeans arrived, they took Native Americans’ lands. Native Americans fought to defend their homes and way of life. Then the government sent them to reservations. Many of them still live on reservations and are poorer than other Americans. They try to keep their traditions, language and culture, and hold festivals with dancing and music.
