St Petersburg is one of the most famous cities in Russia. Its first name was St Petersburg. In 1914 it got the name Petrograd, then it was changed to Leningrad, and later it became St Petersburg again.
The city was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. In 1712 the capital was moved to Petersburg. Soon it became the home of Russian tsars and began to grow fast. People often call it Peter for short.
St Petersburg is situated on the banks of the Neva River near the Baltic Sea. Strong winds blow from the sea there. The city has a lot of cold and rainy days and not much sunshine, so its autumns and winters are often unpleasant.
St Petersburg is famous for its beauty. There is a monument to Peter the Great there. The city has 342 bridges, the Winter Palace, Dvortsovaya Square, the Summer Garden, theatres, museums and picture galleries.
