1. Columbus and his discovery. Christopher Columbus was born in Italy. He lived in Spain and was a sailor. He made sea voyages and was interested in India. Columbus knew that the planet was round, so he decided to sail west. He arrived in Central America and discovered the New World.

2. Native Americans. Native Americans came to America from Asia. They lived in different tribes and lived in wigwams, or wooden houses. They hunted animals and fished. Later they fought with Europeans and defended their land. Many of them now live on reservations, but they keep their traditions, remember their language, songs and tales, and have interesting festivals with music and dancing.

3. New York — the largest city of the USA. New York is an important centre of culture. It is situated in the northeast of the country and lies on some islands. It is not the capital of New York State. New York is famous for its skyscrapers, streets and avenues. Manhattan is the central part of New York.
