Melting watches — surreal and strange. They make me feel confused and shocked.
Seaside and rocks in the background — calm and peaceful. They make me feel relaxed.
Ballet dancers rehearsing — graceful and lively. They make me feel excited.
People sitting outside a cafe — warm and quiet. They make me feel comfortable.
Some people walking down a cobbled street — ordinary and realistic. They make me feel calm.
Melting watches — Surrealism.
Seaside and rocks in the background — Surrealism.
Ballet dancers rehearsing — Impressionism.
People sitting outside a cafe — Impressionism.
Some people walking down a cobbled street — Expressionism.
- Surrealism started in 1924, led by the French poet Andre Breton.
- Surrealists wanted to show that our dreams and thoughts are as important as the world we can see and touch.
- Some famous surrealists were Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte and Marcel Duchamp.
- Impressionism started in France in the last decade of the 19th century.
- Impressionism is characterised by small touches of paint and by showing moments and sensations.
- Some impressionist artists were Paul Cezanne, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas and Pierre Auguste Renoir.
- Expressionists aim to paint images that reflect their emotions.
- Expressionist paintings look distorted because the artists use bright colours, dark brushstrokes and unusual images to portray anxiety and horror.
Four things I’ve learnt:
- Surrealism was founded in 1924.
- Surrealists combined fantasy with reality in odd ways.
- Impressionists used small touches of paint.
- Expressionist artists used bright colours and dark brushstrokes.
I like Impressionism the most because it is beautiful and peaceful. The paintings often show light, colour and everyday life in a very natural way.
