Read Rob’s story about Guy Fawkes’ Night and complete the following sentences.
Guy Fawkes was a real man. On 5th November 1605, Guy Fawkes and his friends put a bomb under the Houses of Parliament in London. But the guards found not only the bomb but also Guy Fawkes there. Later, the King’s men cut off his head in the Tower of London.
Nowadays, on 5th November or the nearest Saturday night, people go to big organised fireworks shows or have their own parties. They usually make a big bonfire. On top of the bonfire is a “guy” which is made from straw, old clothes and newspapers. That’s the figure of Guy Fawkes. They stand around the bonfire, set off fireworks and eat lots of nice bonfire food, like sausages and jacket potatoes.
The history of Bonfire Night is sad, but nowadays people have a good time on the holiday.
