I: Hello and welcome to tonight’s programme!
Today we’ve got Susan Shepherd with us, a student at the Royal Blind School in Edinburgh. As well as studying for her exams. Susan’s also a successful athlete!
Hello Susan.
S: Hi!
I: Congratulations on your gold medal at the World Championships!
S: Thanks — it was fantastic to win gold in the 200 metres.
I: So, tell us about your school — is PE your favourite subject?
S: Yeah, of course! I love PE — especially athletics. I love running!
I: Does your blindness affect how you compete as an athlete?
S: Well, I run with a guide. He’s great, his name’s Jake. We train together and he runs with me in the races.
I: OK. So, what other subjects do you like at school?
S: Err … I love Science, and I like ICT as well. We often use computers.
I: And what about your free time? What do you like doing at the weekend?
S: Well, I don’t have much free time at the weekend, because I train a lot. But I enjoy dancing when I can. I usually dance salsa on Saturday evenings with my friends and my boyfriend.
I: Great! Have you got any brothers and sisters?
S: Yeah — I’ve got one brother — Ben — and two sisters, Martha and Jenny.
I: One more question. What do you want to do when you finish school, do you think?
S: Well, I want to continue running, definitely. I want to compete in the next Paralympics! And I want to inspire other blind people to do athletics.
I: Well, I’m sure you will. Fantastic, Susan! Good luck with the Paralympics and …
