Difficult days
During the next two weeks, the weather was very cold. First came the snow. It began suddenly one morning just as Charlie Bucket was dressing for school. After the snow, there came a freezing wind that blew for days and days without stopping. Oh, how cold it was! Inside the house freezing air came through the sides of the windows and under the doors. There was no place to escape it. The Buckets had only two problems: to keep warm and to get enough to eat. There is something about cold weather that gives people a very good appetite. But Charlie Bucket never got what he wanted because his family was very poor. He was always hungry. Then Mr Bucket lost his job and couldn’t find a new one. Slowly everybody in the house began to starve.
- Did you guess right? What problem did the Buckets have?
- How can you prove that the weather was really very cold? (Reading for detail)
- Do you feel hungry when the weather is cold?
Part 2
Starvation can change people.
- Did starvation change Charlie? (Reading for the main idea)
“That child,” said Grandpa Joe, “must have more food. He is a growing boy! He is beginning to look like a skeleton!”
“What can we do?” said Grandma Josephine. “He doesn’t take any of our food. His mother tried to put her piece of bread on his plate, but he didn’t eat it. He made her take it back!”
“He is a fine little boy,” said Grandpa George. “He deserves better than this.”
The awful weather went on and on. Every day Charlie Bucket grew thinner and thinner. His face became white. And now he began to make little changes in the things he did, so as to save his strength. In the mornings he left the house ten minutes earlier so that he could walk slowly to school. He sat quietly in the classroom during break while others played snowballs. Everything he did now, he did slowly and carefully.
- What did Charlie do when he was starving? (Reading for detail)

Part 3
The Buckets didn’t know what to do.
- What or who helped the Buckets in this situation? What do you think?
- a) A magician helped the Buckets.
- b) Charlie’s father found a new job.
- c) A rich person bought some food for them.
- d) Charlie found some money in the street.
- Read to check if you guessed right.
One afternoon Charlie walked back home. Suddenly he saw something silvery in the snow. Charlie stopped and examined it. It was a fifty pence piece! Charlie looked around. Who has lost it? Several people passed by. None of them was searching for any money. Then was it his this fifty pence? Could he have it? Charlie pulled it out from under the snow. A WHOLE fifty pence. He held it tightly. It meant one thing to him at that moment, only one thing. It meant FOOD. Automatically Charlie turned and moved to the nearest shop. What would he do? He would buy a bar of chocolate and eat it all up, every bit of it, right then and there … and the rest of the money he would take back home and give to his mother.
- What do you think about Charlie’s behaviour?
1) The correct answer is a) The Buckets began to starve.
2) The story says that the weather was very cold: first it snowed, then a freezing wind blew for days and days, and freezing air came through the sides of the windows and under the doors.
3) Yes, I did. The Buckets had the problem of not having enough food, and they began to starve.
4) Charlie was starving, so he changed his behaviour. He walked slowly to school, sat quietly during break, and did everything slowly and carefully to save his strength.
5) The correct statements are:

- c) He walked slowly and didn’t play.
The wrong statements are a and d. Charlie did not give his bread to his mother, and he did change because of starvation.
