Reader, упр. 1
In the past, British people measured food in pounds and ounces. Nowadays, they still sometimes use these old measures. They can ask for fruit in pounds and ounces, milk in pints and quarts, and petrol in gallons.
To cook the traditional British dish, we need:
- 1 kilo of meat;
- 2 or 3 small onions;
- 100 grams of oil;
- 250 grams of peas;
- 1 kilo of potatoes;
- 450 grams of tomatoes;
- 200 grams of cheese.
The amounts are 1 kilogram of meat, 2 or 3 small onions, 100 grams of oil, 250 grams of peas, 1 kilogram of potatoes, 450 grams of tomatoes and 200 grams of cheese.
Before 1971, British people used pounds, shillings, farthings and pence. There were twenty shillings in a pound and twelve pence in a shilling. A farthing was a quarter of a penny. Nowadays, British people use pounds and pence. There are one hundred pence in a pound. They usually say “p” instead of “pence” and “penny”.
Pound means a measure of weight and a unit of currency.
