Question tags with a falling intonation usually do not need a Yes/No answer. They are used when the speaker expects agreement.
Question tags with a rising intonation usually do need a Yes/No answer. They sound like real questions.
Examples:
- You’re a student, aren’t you? — no Yes/No answer needed if the intonation falls.
- You’re a student, aren’t you? — Yes/No answer needed if the intonation rises.
