• the is used with names of groups of islands, rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges and some countries: the United Kingdom, the British Isles, the Atlantic Ocean;
• no article is used with most country names, cities and continents: England, Scotland, Wales, London, Europe.

Answer: the article the is used with some geographical names, while most country and city names are used without an article.
