Read the text “England or Great Britain?” again and analyse the use of articles with geographical names in it.

In the text England or Great Britain? the articles with geographical names are used like this:

• the is used with names of groups of islands, rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges and some countries: the United Kingdom, the British Isles, the Atlantic Ocean;
• no article is used with most country names, cities and continents: England, Scotland, Wales, London, Europe.

Answer: the article the is used with some geographical names, while most country and city names are used without an article.
