• Background Information
St Patrick’s Day is held in Ireland and in many cities around the world. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. The biggest parade is held in New York, which has a large Irish population. Thanksgiving is celebrated in the USA.. Originally, settlers in 1621 thanked God that they had enough food for the winter.
Guy Fawkes was part of a gang which planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament (the government) in London in 1605. He was caught before he could light the gunpowder.
Halloween was originally believed to be the night when the spirits of the dead appeared.
May Day is celebrated in many countries on 1st May. People collect flowers and make wreaths. May Day celebrates the spring.
Valentine’s Day is the day when people in love exchange cards, flowers, chocolates and gifts.
