a) The letters on the compass mean:

• N — the north
• S — the south
• E — the east
• W — the west

They can also show directions like northeast, southwest, etc.

b)

1. A: Where exactly is Arica?
   B: It’s in the north of Chile.
2. A: Where exactly is La Paz?
   B: It’s in the west of Bolivia.
3. A: Where exactly is Asunción?
   B: It’s in the south of Paraguay.
