b) What are the spelling rules for adding -ed to the regular verbs in the past simple? Look at the list you made in Ex. 4a and say.

a) Verbs in the past simple from the text:

• visited
• watched
• played
• helped
• stayed
• liked
• stopped
• planned

b) Spelling rules for -ed:

• Most regular verbs add -ed: help → helped.
• Verbs ending in -e add only -d: like → liked.
• Verbs ending in a consonant + y change y to i and add -ed: study → studied.
• Verbs ending in a single vowel + consonant usually double the consonant before adding -ed: stop → stopped, plan → planned.
