A for-and-against essay
1 Read the Writing Tip. then read the essay and find the arguments for and against the topic. What examples/ justifications does the writer use to support his arguments?
Writing for-and-against essays
A for-and-against essay is a formal piece of writing which discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a topic.
In the introduction we introduce the topic. In the main body we present the arguments for and against with examples/ justifications in separate paragraphs. Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence that presents the main idea of the paragraph.
In the condusion, we summarise the arguments and give our opinion (I think, I believe. In my opinion). We use linkers to join our ideas.
Linking words/phrases
to list/add points: Firstly, Secondly, In the first place. To start with, Finally, In addition, Moreover, etc
to introduce/list (disadvantages: The main/first advantage of…, One/Another advantage of…
to conclude: In conclusion. All in all, Finally, Lastly, etc
to show contrast On the other hand, but, still, However, etc
2 Find the topic sentences in the main body paragraphs. Suggest other appropriate ones.
Is it a good idea to Study abroad?
These days more and more people are deriding to study abroad. Some think this is a good idea because it is challenging and life enriching, but others believe it is not particularly beneficial and can cause certain problems.
Without a doubt, there are some advantages to studying abroad. Firstly, you can become fluent in the local language. This is a valuable skill that will improve your employment prospects when you graduate. Secondly, studying abroad allows you to learn a great deal about another culture. You can gain knowledge and friends and have new and valuable experiences that will enrich your life.
On the other hand, there are a number of disadvantages to studying abroad. To begin with. It is very expensive. This could mean that you have a huge debt to repay at the end of you studies. In addition, not all foreign students enjoy studying abroad. They may have problems adjusting or become and unhappy.
All in al. there are both advantages and disadvantages to studying abroad. In my opinion, people should consider all the pros and cons carefully before making the decision.

1. Arguments for: studying abroad is challenging and life enriching; you can become fluent in the local language; you can learn a great deal about another culture; you can gain knowledge, friends and new experiences.

Without a doubt, there are some advantages to extreme dieting. Firstly, it can help people lose weight in a short time. This may be useful if someone needs to get fit for an important event. Secondly, some people feel more confident when they see quick results. This can motivate them to continue taking care of their health.

On the other hand, there are a number of disadvantages to extreme dieting. To begin with, it can be harmful to your body because you may not get enough vitamins and energy. In addition, after a strict diet, many people put the weight back on very quickly. Extreme dieting can also make people feel tired, weak and unhappy.

All in all, extreme dieting has both advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, it is better to choose a healthy and balanced diet instead of following extreme methods.
