Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The book
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a children’s book written by Roald Dahl in 1964. The main characters are Charlie Bucket and Willy Wonka. The book tells the story of Charlie and four other children who win a tour of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The other children are spoilt, and they all have terrible accidents during the tour.
The film
The film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was directed by Mel Stuart and came out in 1971. It starred Gene Wilder. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Music. Another film adaptation, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was directed by Tim Burton and released in 2005. Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka. It became a box office success and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 2006.
Differences between the book and the films
The films are based on the same story, but they show the characters and events in different ways. Tim Burton’s film has a darker style, while the 1971 film is more musical and colourful.
