The USA
In the USA, the weather is sometimes extreme. There are tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and storms.
Hurricane Katrina
A survivor’s story
1836 people died when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. 16-year-old Brian Coates remembers the experience …
What were you doing when the hurricane struck?
I was visiting my grandparents in New Orleans that weekend. We saw the news on TV – before that we didn’t know anything about the storm.
What about your parents? Were they waiting for you at home?
No, they weren’t. They heard the storm was coming and they drove to Texas with my brother Kurt. They tried to contact me but the phones weren’t working.
So what did you do?
The water started rising while I was staying at my grandparents’ house. So we went to a hotel and climbed up on the roof.
How long were you waiting there?
Five days. Finally a helicopter took us to the airport. Then we flew to Washington D.C. and they took us to an emergency centre. There weren’t many people my age, but I made friends when I started school there.
Did you return to New Orleans?
No, I didn’t. My family decided to stay in Texas and I moved there three months later. Our house in New Orleans was completely destroyed and we lost everything. My parents were very sad, but I just feel lucky to be alive!
