Past simple and past continuous:
We use the past simple for short actions. We use the past continuous for longer actions. The past simple describes an event that interrupts a longer action in the past continuous.
We use when or while with the past continuous to mean that something took place during the time another action was happening.
We usually put when before the past simple clause and while before the past continuous clause.
He was playing golf when the lightning struck him.
The lightning struck him while he was playing golf.
