My family: letters from the past

In my family, my parents and grandparents used to write letters much more often than people do now. They wrote letters to relatives, friends and sometimes to people who lived far away. A letter was a special way to keep in touch.

My grandparents say that they usually wrote by hand on paper, put the letter into an envelope and sent it by post. They often waited many days for an answer, so every letter was important and exciting.

My parents remember writing letters when they were children or teenagers, especially to friends from other towns or to relatives. They also used postcards for holidays and birthdays.

Today people usually send messages by phone or email, but old letters are still very valuable. They help us remember the past and understand how people communicated before the Internet.
