The Canterville Ghost
By Oscar Wilde
Part I
The story begins when Mr Hiram Otis, an American, is moving his family to Canterville Chase in England. It is a grand old house and everyone says it is haunted. But Mr Otis says to Lord Canterville, “There are no such things as ghosts.”
A few weeks later, he is joined by Mrs Otis and their four children: their daughter Virginia, twin boys and their eldest son, Washington. At first, none of the members of the Otis family believes in ghosts, but shortly after they move in, they begin to understand that the ghost of Sir Simon is there.
The family hears clanking chains, they see that the bloodstain on the floor by the fireplace, which they remove every time, appears again in various forms and colours. But the Otises are not frightened. One night Mr Otis hears the sound of footsteps …
At eleven o’clock the family went to bed and switched off the light. Some time after, Mr Otis heard a strange noise in the corridor, outside his room.
It sounded like the clank of metal. He put on his slippers, and opened the door. Right in front of him he saw, in the moonlight, an old man. He looked terrible. His eyes were red. His hair was long and grey and fell over his shoulders.
His clothes looked very old and dirty. From his wrists and ankles hung heavy and rusty chains on iron rings.
“My dear sir,” said Mr Otis, “kindly oil your chains. Here is a bottle of Rising Sun Lubricator. I must get some sleep.” The Canterville Ghost threw clown the bottle. He quickly went up the staircase. At this moment the door opened and two little figures in white appeared. These were the wins they threw a large pillow at him. The Ghost hurriedly disappeared through the wall, his colour changing to green. He went to his secret chamber.
