The Soviet Union is short for the USSR, which was the official name of the country. The USSR is the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Soviet Union and the USSR are two names for one and the same country. It used to be in existence up to the time of President Gorbachov. The Soviet Union ceased to exist as a political entity in 1991. The former republics are now independent states.
The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR), the Armenian SSR, the Azerbaijan SSR, the Byelorussian SSR, the Estonian SSR, the Georgian SSR, the Kazakh SSR, the Kyrgyz SSR, the Latvian SSR, the Lithuanian SSR, the Moldavian SSR, the Tajik SSR, the Turkmen SSR, the Ukrainian SSR, and the Uzbek SSR used to be the republics of the USSR or the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union dissolved as a political entity in 1991. The former republics, including Russia, are now independent states.
Russia was always its own republic within the former Soviet Union. The “Soviet Union” was used for the USSR, like we use “America” when we talk about the United States of America. Does that help?
