Education in ancient Russia was closely connected with the church. The first schools appeared after the adoption of Christianity in 988. They were usually opened at monasteries and churches, and boys were taught to read, write and count. The main books were religious texts, so children learned from the Bible and other church books.

At that time education was available only to a small number of people, mostly boys from noble or rich families. Girls usually did not go to school, but some of them were taught at home. Teachers were priests and monks. They used old handwritten books, and writing was done with a quill on parchment.

Education in ancient Russia helped people become literate and kept important knowledge and traditions alive. It was the beginning of the Russian school system.
