Angela: I really like cycling and I use my bike to go to school every day.
Tim: But why. Angela? What do you like about cycling?
Angela: Well, two things really. First it’s very good exercise. It keeps me fit. And the other thing is that it’s very cheap. The bus is very expensive now, so I save a pound every day if I use my bike. What about you, Tim? Do you like cycling?
Tim: No. I don’t, not really, no …
Angela: Why don’t you like it?
Tim: Well, for one thing there’s the British weather. It’s awful’ Cycling’s OK in summer, but when it is raining in winter, you know, it rams and it’s cold. It’s terrible!
Angela: And what else don’t you like about it?
Tim: Well, it’s dangerous too. You’ve got car drivers and bus drivers, they just don’t worry about cyclists. Do you know, three of my friends had accidents last year. What did you think, Nick?
Nick: Well, cycling’s dangerous, but you have to choose the right roads whom there are no cars. I ride my bike to college every day and it’s very quick — it only takes me twenty minutes and it takes me at least an hour by car. So it’s much quicker and of course there’s no problem with parking when you get there either.
Ruth: Yes, but there are other problems as well …
Nick: What ore those, Ruth?
Ruth: Well, I go to school m the city centre and there’s such a lot of traffic cars, buses, lorries, that the pollution is terrible. It’s bad enough walking, but on bicycle it’s worse. Besides, there’s the problem of bike theft too. I had a bike until last year, but it was stolen, I stopped outside at the newsagent’s, left the bike outside. I was only in there five minutes and when I came out it was gone.
Angela: No! Really? Well, I bought a U-lock when I bought my bike …
