Задание 2 Dialogue of cultures (4) ГДЗ Вербицкая Forward 7 класс
Did you know … why English and French are official languages in Canada?
Why two languages?
How did it all happen?
Canada has two official languages: English and French. Most Canadians speak either French or English, and many speak both. English is used all over Canada except in Quebec, where French is the official language.
The first people to live in Canada were the Inuits. The first Europeans to reach the country were likely the Vikings. European settlement began in the 16th century. In 1534 Jacques Cartier discovered the St Lawrence River and claimed Canada for France. The French settled there in 1541, and the first official settlement, Port Royal, was established in 1604.
The English also began exploring Canada and in 1670 established the Hudson’s Bay Company. Later, the English won control of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Hudson Bay. The Seven Years’ War ended in 1763, and England got full control of Canada with the Treaty of Paris.
After that many English colonists moved to Canada. In 1849 Canada was given the right to self-government, and in 1867 the country was officially established. Today Canada is a federal parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy.
