Did you know … why NZ rugby team is called “All Blacks”?

Are they celebrating their victory?

Are they expressing their anger at their defeat?

The New Zealand rugby team is called “All Blacks” because the name was probably coined during their 1905–06 tour of the British Isles. There are different theories about its origin: one says it came from a newspaper misprint of “all backs”, and another says it referred to the team’s all-black playing strip. Most likely, it was a combination of both.

The players in the photo are not playing rugby. They are performing haka, a Maori dance.
