Find sentences beginning with wish in Exercise 19. Why do you think Rachel and Nikita say “I wish” and not “I would like”?

Rachel and Nikita say I wish because they are talking about things they want to be different in the present or future, but which are not true now. I wish is used for regrets and unreal situations.

I would like is used to express a polite desire or preference, for example when asking for something or saying what you want. It does not show regret in the same way.
