Why is the Russian czar Ivan IV called “the Terrible”? Was he really so bad? He did much to make Russia a great powerful country, didn’t he?

The English word terrible is usually used to translate the Russian word “grozny” in Ivan’s nickname. The word “terrible” means “bad” or “evil”. The meaning of “grozny” is closer to the original usage of “terrible” — inspiring fear or terror, dangerous, formidable or threatening. Perhaps a translation closer to the intended sense would be “Ivan the Fearsome”, or “Ivan the Formidable”.
