“Haka” is a type of an ancient Maori war dance. It was traditionally used on the battlefield, as well as when groups came together in peace. It shows a tribe’s pride, strength and unity. Haka is performed by men, and women accompany the dance by their singing. Most haka seen today are “haka taparahi” — haka without weapons. In the picture dating back to 1845 you can see men performing haka with weapons.
Today, haka is still used during Maori ceremonies and celebrations to honour guests and show the importance of the occasion. The dance is also used to challenge opponents on the sports field. New Zealand’s “All Blacks’ always perform haka before a rugby match.
