Volunteers at the Olympics are very important. Most of them want to help those in need — 80% of volunteers say this is their goal. 75% want to achieve a specific goal, and 70% want to get a new outlook on life, work and people.
The number of Olympic volunteers has grown a lot over the years. In 1952, there were only 2,191 volunteers in Helsinki. In 1980, Lake Placid had 6,700 volunteers. The number increased to 29,000 in Los Angeles in 1984 and 34,548 in Seoul in 1988. In Atlanta in 1996, there were 60,000 volunteers. Sydney in 2000 had 47,000, Athens in 2004 had 60,000, and Beijing in 2008 had as many as 500,000 volunteers. Vancouver in 2010 had 29,500 volunteers, and London in 2012 had 60,000.
At the Sochi 2014 Olympics, 25,000 volunteers were involved. This shows that volunteers play a big role in the Olympic Games and help make them successful.
