Did you know … … who founded the Paralympics?

The idea of the Paralympics belongs to Professor Sir Ludwig Guttmann. He was born in Germany in 1899. He became a doctor when he was 25 years old. In 1938 he moved to Great Britain, and in 1943 he became the director of Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Guttmann did not simply treat paralysed patients. He wanted to rehabilitate them and help them have a normal, useful life again. He believed that sport helps both the body and the mind, so he encouraged his patients to take part in sports.

In 1948 the hospital held the first sporting event called The Stoke Mandeville Games. By 1952 the competition became bigger. In 1960 Guttmann arranged for wheelchair athletes to compete in a “parallel” Olympics in Rome alongside the official Summer Olympics. Later this event was called the Paralympics.
